This educational course is organised as part of the TB PAN-NET project that is funded by the EU 7th Framework Programme Network of Excellence to combat the multidrug‐resistant tuberculosis (MDR‐TB) that faces Europe.
The TB PAN-NET project aims to integrate and coordinate the activities of physicians and scientists from many institutions in 27 European countries to address the challenge of MDR‐TB by establishing a network of expert partners who possess extensive experience in the conduct of basic and clinical research related to MDR‐TB, TB control and molecular epidemiology.

 ERS Clinical Research Collaboration

 
This educational course is organised through the clinical research collaboration of the ERS. TBNET is an European research peer group in the field of TB. Recent results from TBNET have an important impact on the diagnosis and treatment of patients with TB including patients with MDR-TB and extensively drug-resistant (XDR)-TB. Educational Aims

At the end of the training participants will be able to:

  • Apply key epidemiologial concepts to the clinical practice
  • Use new skills to diagnose TB infection and disease in adults and children
  • Use new skills to treat latent TB infected individuals and drug-susceptible TB cases
  • Understand the principles underlying treatment of multidrug-resistant TB cases
  • Draft a scientific article and look critically at published studies on TB
  • Identify the priority areas for research and draft research protocols
  • Build up networks of clinicians and scientists in TB care and research
  • Identify and use the principles of career advice, planning and developing networks

  • Clinical immunologists
  • Clinical epidemiologists
  • Internal medicine specialists

Case Presentations

You are strongly encouraged to submit cases for discussion during the case review period. For easy submission, please follow the steps below:

  • Tuberculosis should be the theme of the case study 
  • Prepare your case study in a Word document of <200 words
  • Give a clear description of the patient, including the clinical manifestations and any radiological pictures or pathological findings
  • Include all images pertaining to the case study within the document
  • State the questions which you would like to be discussed by the participants
  • If your case study is selected, you will be asked to prepare a short PowerPoint presentation with a maximum of five slides

Bursaries (Available to ERS/TB PAN-NET Members only)

A limited number of bursaries, covering either full attendance or registration only, will be available to selected applicants under 40 years of age who are members of the ERS and TB PAN-NET and from countries with economies in transition. Selection from the pool of applicants will be made by the organising committee based on the submission of:

  • Curriculum vitae
  • A one-page personal statement explaining how you would apply the knowledge gained from this course.

The deadline for applications for bursaries is 26 March 2010. Applicants will be notified of selection results by 30 April 2010.
