In conjunction with the Turkish Thoracic Society, the ERS is proud to announce an ERS Live presentation in Turkish.
This ERS Live, on the subject of pulmonary cancer, includes two presentations:
Primary tumours of the trachea are very rare, comprising less than 0.1% of all malignancies. Most tumours of the trachea are either lung or thyroid cancers invading the trachea. The most common primary malignant tracheal tumours are squamous cell, adenoid cystic and mucoepidermoid carcinomas. Squamous cell papillomas are common as benign lesions.
For metastatic tumours or secondary cancers, surgical resection is rarely an option, and is limited to cancers that are completely resectable. Surgery is the mainstay treatment of primary tracheal tumors. Tracheal surgery has many specifications, such as: limitation of resectability to 5-6 cm; cervical, thoracic or transsternal approaches; and variability of suture techniques and materials. The field of interventional bronchology is relatively new in pulmonary medicine. The development of this field was mainly stimulated by technological advances, as well as the increasing need for palliative and curative treatment strategies for patients with tracheobronchial, parenchymal and pleural disease. This lecture will review advances in the endoscopic techniques of the tracheobronchial system, including laser photoresection, electrosurgery, argon-plasma coagulation (APC), cryotherapy, balloon bronchoplasty, stent placement and brachytherapy.
In recent years, patients with advanced lung cancers have benefited from endobronchial therapies, with improved symptoms and thus quality of life in the different periods of their disease. These treatment options should be applied as a part of a multimodality treatment strategy by the thoracic oncology team.
