 ERS Funding Programmes 2010

For 2010, the ERS offers four funding schemes for professionals actively engaged in clinical and basic research in respiratory medicine and clinical pulmonary practice.

The awards are funded by the ERS in order to enable qualified doctors and respiratory investigators to carry out specific research and clinical projects or to obtain training in a clinical or research unit in another European country.


NEW Postdoctoral ERS/Marie Curie Joint Research Fellowships (RESPIRE Programme)

ERS/Marie Curie Postdoctoral Research Fellowship Programme:

The ERS is pleased to announce the opening of the call for Postdoctoral ERS/Marie Curie Joint Research Fellowships (RESPIRE) under the EU Seventh Framework Programme (FP7) - Marie Curie Actions. The RESPIRE programme is supported through the FP7-Marie Curie Actions- PEOPLE-COFUND of the European Commission, Grant number PCOFUND-GA-2008-229571.

The RESPIRE programme aims to enable promising PhD holders and postgraduates holding 4 years full-time research experience to carry out advanced research projects (1 year) in another European country. Applicants will be required to have at least 1 first author publication in an international peer-reviewed journal at the time of application.

The RESPIRE Programme is now open for submissions, with an application deadline extended to January 31, 2010.

  ERS/MC GRANT AMOUNTS & PERFORMANCE OBLIGATIONS 2010

  • Applications were to be submitted by the extended deadline of January 31, 2010. 
  • You can expect a decision by the second week of May 2010.
  • Approximately 10 applications will be selected.
  • The start date of the fellowship cannot be set earlier than July 2010.
  • Open to all nationalities, but only host institutions based in Europe may participate in the programme.
  • Applications must involve an agreement with a hosting/receiving institute in Europe where the fellowship will be carried out. The allocation of the fellowship grant is based on a complete and detailed project description (including work protocol and timelines), to be submitted by the candidate and carrying the endorsement of the host supervisor.
  • The ERS/Marie Curie Joint Fellowships are co-funded jointly by the ERS and the European Commission. The objective is to enable outstanding investigators and clinicians to carry out advanced research projects of scientific excellence in the area of respiratory medicine through a 12-month work period in another country in Europe.

  • COFUND Programmes

    Co-funding of regional, national and international programmes (COFUND)

    COFUND offers funding to existing or new regional, national and international fellowship programmes for research training and career development.

    Long-Term Research Fellowships

    • Applications were to be submitted by January 31, 2010. 
    • You can expect a decision in May for a LTRF application submitted in January.
    • The Fellowships are funded by the ERS with the objective of enabling investigators and clinicians, who are in the early stages of their careers, to carry out basic or clinical research projects and to develop, acquire and apply advanced research procedures and techniques, not available in the Home unit, in the area of respiratory medicine through a 6- to 12-month work period in a foreign country in Europe. Approximately nine applications are selected annually.
    • The ERS does not apply an upper age limit for candidates as an eligibility criterion. Awards are conditional on the availability of appropriate facilities and resources to apply the newly acquired skills. The return of the Fellow to the home institution at the end of the Fellowship is encouraged.
    • ERS/SEPAR (Spain) joint Long-Term Fellowships are now also available (one Long-Term Fellowship per year). The qualifying candidate may be from Spain going to another European country or from Europe or overseas going to Spain. To apply for a joint Fellowship with SEPAR, please use the same online application form as that for the other ERS Fellowships.

    Are you are interested in funding for a Training or Research Fellowship this year? If yes, then the ERS Short-Term Fellowships are for you. Our Short-Term Fellowships are designed to comply with subsistence rates and there are 2 deadlines per year to submit applications. A decision can be expected 3 months after the submission deadline. Simply, it is the fastest and easiest way to carry out research and training in 2009. The fellowship is to be undertaken in a (European) country other than the candidate's own.

    ERS/AIMAR (Italy) joint Short-Term Fellowships are now also available (4 Short-Term Fellowships per year). The qualifying candidate may be from Italy going to another European country or from Europe or overseas going to Italy. To apply for a joint Fellowship with AIMAR, please use the same online application form as that for the other ERS Fellowships. In addition, you should send a copy of the application to AIMAR along with the cover letter (to be downloaded from the online application). AIMAR will review the application and if selected will send a recommendation form to the ERS.


    Visiting Professorships

    This programme is funded by the ERS with the objective of enabling senior investigators and clinicians, who are in the established stages of their careers, to conduct short exchange visits in hospitals and university departments, in order to promote cooperation in the field of respiratory medicine. The Professorship is to be undertaken in a (European) country other than the candidate's own.
