7 - 9 October – Hanover – Germany Noninvasive positive pressure ventilation: consensus, controversies and new horizons Organisers: B. Schönhofer, T. Welte, M. Elliott, A. Simonds and S. Nava. Aims: The aims of this course are: to provide a comprehensive overview of the current stage of noninvasive ventilation (NIV) in acute and chronic settings; to detail the evidence base for NIPPV in the ICU, respiratory intermediate care unit, respiratory ward and home care; to provide hands-on experience in setting up a variety of ventilators for acute and chronic use; to focus on, and improve, practical problem-solving skills; to provide an overview of all sleep-related breathing disorders. Course goals: At the end of the course, participants will have a detailed knowledge of: Setting up an NIV programme; Choosing ventilators and interfaces; Selecting appropriate patients and initating NIV’ Weaning using NIV; NIV during endoscopic procedures; Home NIV in COPD; Current guidelines; Areas of controversy.

4 - 5 November – Budapest – Hungary GRACE: Hot topics in lower respiratory tract infections Aims: This workshop covers the most up to date topics including: host susceptibility to infections, recent advances, preview of ERS/ESCMID guidelines, improving the patient care pathway, and H1N1. It takes place within the context of GRACE, an EU-funded network of excellence charged with applying Genomics to combat Resistance against Antibiotics in Community-Acquired LRTI in Europe. This will be an interactive workshop, which includes an expert debate. Registration will be open soon. Please check ERS School Courses regularly.
23 - 26 November – Marseille – France Thoracoscopy and pleural techniques Organisers: P. Astoul. Aims: These courses are aimed at pulmonologists and thoracic surgeons who want to train in diagnostic and therapeutic interventional pulmonology. As a rule, two-thirds of the courses are devoted to “hands-on” workshops and one-third to the theoretical aspects of bronchoscopy or thoracoscopy. The participants will have the opportunity to practice live bronchoscopy or thoracoscopy (using pigs and sheep). The operating rooms are equipped with full video equipment. Each course is tutored by 4-6 internationally recognised experts.

Aims: This course is designed to provide a basic overview on all sleep breathing disorders, to understand their specific pathophysiology and consequences. Practical issues covered during specific workshops include vigilance assessment, quality of life, treatment by CPAP and oral appliances, cardiovascular and metabolic assessment.
