Aims: To provide a comprehensive understanding of the physiological basis of exercise testing. Course goals: Recognise the indications and the protocols used in clinical setting (i.e. incremental, constant work-rate). Discuss the clinical applications of exercise testing in lung and heart diseases. Understand the utility of exercise testing in the prescription and evaluation of rehabilitation programmes. Recognise the emerging importance of exercise testing in the prognostic setting.

Course goals: This course is aimed at pulmonologists and thoracic surgeons who want to train in diagnostic and therapeutic interventional pulmonology. As a rule, two-thirds of the course is devoted to “hands-on” workshops and one-third to the theoretical aspects of bronchoscopy. The participants will have the opportunity to practice live bronchoscopy (using pigs and sheep).

Aims: To give healthcare workers, who are or will be be working in a CF team, a closer multi-disciplinary approach to CF care to transition from paediatric to adult care, to promote collaboration between CF care-givers throughout Europe, to increase the number of healthcare workers with adequate knowledge and interest in CF.

Course goals: This course is aimed at pulmonologists and thoracic surgeons who want to train in diagnostic and therapeutic interventional pulmonology. As a rule, two-thirds of the courses are devoted to “hands-on” workshops and one-third to the theoretical aspects of bronchoscopy or thoracoscopy. The participants will have the opportunity to practice live bronchoscopy or thoracoscopy (using pigs and sheep). The operating rooms are equipped with full video equipment. Each course is tutored by 4-6 internationally recognised experts.

October 7–9 – Hanover – Germany Noninvasive positive pressure ventilation: consensus, controversies and new horizons Organisers: B. Schönhofer, T. Welte, M. Elliott, A. Simonds and S. Nava. Aims: The aims of this course are: to provide a comprehensive overview of the current stage of noninvasive ventilation (NIV) in acute and chronic settings; to detail the evidence base for NIPPV in the ICU, respiratory intermediate care unit, respiratory ward and home care; to provide hands-on experience in setting up a variety of ventilators for acute and chronic use; to focus on, and improve, practical problem-solving skills; to provide an overview of all sleep-related breathing disorders.
