EU Environment and Health Strategy

In June 2003, the Commission adopted an Environment and Health Strategy (SCALE) to tackle the key diseases linked with Environmental causes. SCALE was adopted under the joint responsibility of the Commissioners (at that time) responsible for Environment, Health and Research.

The first phase of the strategy will focus on four key health concerns:
  • Childhood respiratory diseases
  • Neurodevelopment disorders
  • Childhood cancers
  • Endocrine disruptor effects

In June 2004, the Commission adopted an implementation plan for the EU Strategy on Environment and Health - Environment and Health Action Plan 2004-2010, which was criticised by the European Parliament for not bringing forward funding necessary to implement the plan, not concentrating on the health of EU's children and for the lack of positive actions in the face of scientific evidence.
