Candidates who have received another ERS Main Award in the past three years will not be considered.


COPD Research Award

Supported by Boehringer Ingelheim

Main criteria for candidates:

  • You are an ERS member?
  • You are 45 years of age or under (at the time of the application deadline)?
  • You achieved outstanding COPD research and want to continue contributing to the scientific field?

Through the support of Boehringer Ingelheim, the ERS offers an Achievement Award of €50,000 to a young researcher who has made outstanding scientific/research contribution in any sector of COPD and who is pursuing an active research project in the field of COPD, (including basic science, pathophysiology, epidemiology, prevention, clinical practice, diagnosis, treatment, or rehabilitation). Maurizio Vignola Award on Innovation in Pneumology

Main criteria for candidates :

  • You are an ERS member?
  • You are 45 years of age or under (at the time of the application deadline) ?
  • You published a paper, as first or last author, within the past 18 months, in a peer reviewed journal?

Closing date for applications is March 8, 2010. Notification of selection will be sent in May 2010.

The award is dedicated to the memory of Prof. A. Maurizio Vignola (1964-2004), for his outstanding contribution to the field of respiratory medicine. It is aimed as a best publication award. The scope of the research to be considered will be in the area of respiratory medicine and will focus on the basic mechanisms in respiratory diseases. Original research should not have been previously sponsored by pharmaceutical industries.


Romain Pauwels Research Award

Supported by GlaxoSmithKline

The award aims to encourage a new generation of lung scientists and to support young researchers in their quest to understand and treat respiratory illnesses.

Main criteria for candidates:

  • You are an ERS member?
  • You are 45 years of age or under (at the time of the application deadline) ?
  • You achieved outstanding clinical research on airway diseases and want to continue contributing to the scientific field?

Closing date for applications and nominations is March 8, 2010. Notification of selection will be sent in May 2010.

The award is dedicated to the memory of Prof. Romain Pauwels (1943-2005), for his efforts in fighting asthma and COPD. It will be awarded for excellence in previous achievements in clinical research on airways diseases, such as Asthma and related diseases. Other respiratory diseases are however not excluded. The winner will be obliged to undertake certain travelling lectureship commitments. The research grant part of the award should preferably be used for support of young research fellows. Original research should not have been previously sponsored by pharmaceutical industries.


Research Award on Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension

Main criteria for candidates:

  • You are an ERS member?
  • You are on a research project in the field of pulmonary arterial hypertension?

This research award of 10,000€, supported by Actelion Pharmaceuticals Ltd, is awarded in recognition of advances and research in the field of pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH), to an investigator for the best research in this field.

Paediatric Research Awards

Supported by Merck & Co.

Main criteria for candidates:

  • You are an ERS member?
  • You are 40 years of age or under (at the time of the application deadline)?
  • You worked on advances and research in the field of paediatric respiratory medicine or closely associated discipline?

Closing date for applications is March 8, 2010. Notification of selection will be sent in May 2010.

Through the support of the Merck & Co, the ERS offers two grants of €10,000 and €15,000 every year. It is intended as a best research Award. The scope of the research to be considered will be in the area of paediatric respiratory medicine or closely associated discipline. The Awards are to be used to further investigate in the area of the selected work and will be partially given to the institution.

Thoracic Oncology Research Award

Main criteria for candidates:

  • You are an ERS member?
  • You are 45 years of age or under at the time of the submission deadline?
  • You are working in a research programme in thoracic oncology?

    This research award will be dedicated in recognition of advances and research in the field of thoracic oncology to a young investigator for the best research in this field.
