Educational Aims
- To update on the importance of modifier on the disease severity and outcome of CF
- To update knowledge of the roles of CFTR in the pathophysiology of CF
- To update on the current concept of host microorganism interaction. To understand the difference between pathogens and less pathogenic microorganisms; the role of viruses; the value of resistance in vivo and in vitro; factors that affect the effectiveness of antibiotics (sputum, aerosolised antibiotics, mechanisms of resistance)
- To update knowledge on the diagnostic algorithms in the diagnosis of atypical cases of CF
- To understand the basics of evidence-based medicine in CF and understanding what answers the literature in CF can give and what answers are not yet available
- To be able to understand how relevant the results of large-scale randomised controlled trials are for an individual
- To understand the value of databases at the level of a CF centre, and at the national and at the international level
- To have understanding of how inflammation contributes to the severity of CF lung disease and what could be strategies to treat this inflammation
- To understand the complexity of drug development programmes; to understand the basics of pharmacoeconomics and the role of Phase I, II, III and IV trials
- To improve skills in designing clinical trials and writing grant applications
- To be aware of the opportunities to raise funding for CF-related research in a highly competitive world
Target audience
- (Paediatric) pulmonologists
- CF clinicians
- Internists who are involved in CF care
Course goals
At the end of the course, participants will:
- Have state-of-the-art knowledge of important issues in the pathophysiology of CF lung disease
- Have state-of-the-art knowledge on the diagnosis of (a)typical CF
- Understand the strengths and weaknesses of evidence based on medicine
- Understand the basics of running research trials in CF
- Be able to put together a protocol
- Be able to understand the strengths and weaknesses of various CF database formats
- Understand key issues in health economics
- Have learned about the importance and future perspective of CF organisations at a regional, national and international level
