It's an important disease not just for these reasons but also for the very real possibility that the number of confirmed diagnoses (900,000) is likely to be just the tip of the iceberg which could place actual prevalence at an astounding 2 million.


European Respiratory Journal wins the ALPSP/Charlesworth award for learned journals 2005

The winners of the prestigious Association of Learned and Professional Society Publishers (ALPSP) Awards and the ALPSP/Charlesworth Awards were announced at the Association's annual dinner held at the Royal Society of Medicine in London on Thursday 15 September 2005.
Alan Singleton, Chair of the Panel of Judges for 2005, reported that that over 20 applications were received for the ALPSP/Charlesworth Award for Learned Journals, which is for outstanding journal design and is open to all publishers or journal owners worldwide. In a very competitive field he was pleased to announce the winner was the European Respiratory Journal, published by the European Respiratory Society.

New Romain Pauwels Research Fund launched by European Respiratory Society (ERS)

Aims to encourage a new generation of lung disease researchers - The European Respiratory Society (ERS) and GSK jointly announced today the launch of the Romain Pauwels Research Fund, to help support young researchers in their quest to understand and treat respiratory illnesses. The prevalence of respiratory diseases is predicted to increase over the next 15 years. The Romain Pauwels Research Fund, aimed at up-and-coming researchers, will help by providing an annual grant of 50,000 Euros to support their work. Sponsorship has been generously made available for at least the next 15 years.

The European Respiratory Society (ERS) is delighted to welcome the 40th ratification of the Framework Convention on Tobacco Control.
This is an important day for global tobacco control however, whilst we are delighted that the ratification of Peru has brought about the all important 40th ratification, we are disappointed to see that only 4 EU Member States have ratified the Treaty so far (Malta, Hungary, Slovakia, France).
