Educational Aims

The aims of this course are:
  • To provide a comprehensive overview of the current state of noninvasive ventilation (NIV) in acute and chronic settings
  • To detail the evidence base for NIPPV in the ICU, respiratory intermediate care unit, respiratory ward and home care
  • To provide hands-on experience in setting up a variety of ventilators for acute and chronic use
  • To focus on, and improve, practical problem-solving skills
  • To provide an overview of all sleep-related breathing disorders

  • Selecting appropriate patients and initiating NIV
  • Management of NIV during acute exacerbations of COPD
  • Use of NIV for non-COPD acute respiratory failure in the ICU
  • Weaning using NIV
  • Post-extubation use of NIV
  • NIV in neuromuscular and restrictive chest wall disease
  • NIV during endoscopic procedures
  • NIV in progressive neuromuscular disease
  • NIV in children
  • Home NIV in COPD
  • NIV in congestive cardiac failure
  • NIV and pulmonary rehabilitation

  • Areas of controversy

Bursaries (Available to ERS Members only)

A limited number of bursaries, covering either full attendance or registration only, will be available to selected applicants under 40 years of age who are members of the ERS and from countries with economies in transition. Selection from the pool of applicants will be made by the organising committee based on the submission of:
  • Curriculum vitae
  • A one-page personal statement explaining how you would apply the knowledge gained from this course
